The main aim of treatment is to inhibit bone resorption. Three drugs that are effective inhibitors of bone resorption have been useful in Paget's disease: calcitonin, bisphosphonates and plicamycin (mithramycin). More than seventy per cent of patients respond to treatment, and the improvement in their wellbeing is dramatic. Current drugs of choice are the new bisphosphonates although, in the future, intranasal calcitonin or oral bisphosphonates may be preferable to therapies that are presently in use.
